NBA:G League

Revision as of 18:34, 7 October 2026 by Sam (talk | contribs) (Generic example roster; Sonics/Bullets in examples; hyphens in post text)

Each team may carry 3 players on a G League roster. They are paid in full but do not occupy an active roster spot, so assigning a player is how you keep a prospect without spending one of your 12–15.

Eligibility

A player with 164 or fewer career NBA games played may be assigned to your G League roster. That threshold is two seasons of service.

Eligibility is checked against career games played on basketball-reference.com.

Situation Rule
164 or fewer career games May be assigned
Crosses 164 while in the G League May stay for the remainder of that season
Called up after crossing 164 Cannot be sent back down
Start of the next season Must be active — no longer on the G League roster

The grandfather is one-way. A player who crosses the threshold mid-season can finish the season down, but the moment you call him up the door closes behind him.

Spots and the cap

Spots 3
Counts against your active roster No
Counts against the salary cap Yes — full salary

An assignment buys roster flexibility, never cap space. See Rosters.

Moving players

Below the threshold, movement is unlimited. A player with 164 or fewer career games may be sent down and recalled as often as you like, and may stay down as long as you want him there.

Above it, the call-up is final.

TAB only replies to a G League move if it is invalid. Silence means the move stands — do not wait for an approval that will not come.

How to post

Create a topic in the NBA: G League + Injured Reserve forum. The title is the player's name and the description is the move — Demote/Promote.

Both promotions and demotions must state the player's contract in the body, and a demotion must also state his career games played or it will be denied:

Sonics demote Mark Eaton (UTA - C) $495,000 (2025, ~2029x) to the G League - 57 GP
Sonics promote Mark Eaton (UTA - C) $495,000 (2025, ~2029x) to the active roster

Your G League roster lives on your team page — a section after Injured Reserve, often named for your real affiliate instead:

G League
Mark Eaton (UTA - C) $495,000 (2025, ~2029x)

See Rosters.
